D-5 and I'm off! Bacalar is last on the list...

You must hate me by now and probably had enough of me throwing beautiful scenic pictures of where I’ll be going in the next few days…

But allow me the pleasure of rubbing that in yo’ face just a little more…with a mini article on my last destination planned while in Mexico: Bacalar.

As I told a travel agent I was looking for roads less travelled, she recommended Bacalar, a small town in the far South of Yucatan, near the border of Belize, famous for its multicoloured lagoon. (All I can see is a myriad of shades of blue!).

We’ll be driving from Mérida to Bacalar, which will take us approximately 4hrs based on Google maps. It should be a cool drive through remote Mexican villages and Mayan ruins…

Suitcase mag (my favourite mag) says very little about Bacalar, except that I shall have the place to myself, as it is “a small corner of paradise as yet undiscovered by the Quintana Roo crowds.” A link to their article might inspire you further more, but I need no more convincing…

On the agenda:

A dip in the oh-so-blue Lake Bacalar, a visit to Cenote Azul, a trip to Fuerte de San Felipe, a wander round the city centre for artisan stores and street food vendors, but more than anything, deep long stares at the aqua blue waters and the deep green forests that surround the area.

We’ll be spending 3 days in this small corner of paradise, after what we’ve got 4 days without any plans, where we’ll be following our intuition back North towards Cancún.
